Each month, I wanted to highlight an artist / designer / entrepreneur and get their recommendations on products available through our online shop. This way, we can get to know the individual, as well as share and cross market our products available. Since this will be our first attempt, I made myself available to be the guinea pig. In doing this, I’m hoping we can have shared value, add value to products and just talk about philosophy and life.

We source our pieces mainly from Northeast United States. Being from Philadelphia and New York, I’m particularly attracted to designers from my region. Wendell Castle is an artist that experiments with different materials and really known for his wood work, but he has an amazing collection of fiberglass pieces. One of which is the MOLAR CHAIR. I’m very fond of the malleability of plastics and often people think of single-use plastics when thinking of plastics as a whole, but the material itself is very sustainable.

Growing up on rap music, one of my early favorites was Outkast. In 2003, when they released Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, I realized how special Andre 3000 was. Andre 3000 released an album that was all singing. I really think he paved the way for all the rappers that sing. Not that he was the first to do it, but he was maybe the first to make a complete album that appealed to the mainstream audience. After a long hiatus, he released a new album in 2023. Only this time, it was a flute album. No rapping, just him playing the flute.

Even before starting GUVS, I’ve wanted to design furniture. Actually, at one point, there was probably a hundred disciplines I wanted to pursue, glass-blowing, metal welding, writing, photography, music, ping-pong but the one that I fixated on the most was video art. While running GUVS, I’ve probably come across thousands of designs and had the chance to break them down, see how they work, fix them and ask customers how they feel about them. There are several interest points to a product but the one that concerns me the most is the price point. For me, it was setting a price point that I was comfortable with, and then working backwards to figure out the materials that we could afford, that had the highest durability. Then how do we make it so that it fits the budget, how do we minimize logistics, minimize the design, how do we maximize the detail within that design. Once we had those questions answered, we then started figuring out the actual design. SH TUBE is GUVS’s first piece from the SH Collection. Its not a new design, its not an entirely amazing design but its a design that works. A product made of long lasting materials, crafted by local artisans. The design can carry multitudes of variations, works well in home and commercial settings and most importantly, its a design that is economically reasonable. Its a contemporary, instagram-infused generation’s take on utilitarian furniture.
GUVS를 시작하기 전에도 가구 디자인을 하고 싶었습니다. 사실 어느 순간에는 아마 100가지 이상의 분야에서 하고 싶은 일들이 있었습니다. 유리공예, 금속용접, 글쓰기, 사진촬영, 음악, 탁구 등 말이죠. 하지만 그 중 가장 집착한 것은 비디오 아트였습니다. GUVS를 운영하면서 아마 수천 개의 디자인을 접하고 분해하고 어떻게 작동하는지 살펴보고 수정하고 고객들이 어떻게 느끼는지 물어볼 기회가 있었습니다. 제품에는 여러 관심 지점이 있지만 저에게 가장 중요한 것은 가격대입니다. 제게는 편안한 가격대를 설정하고, 그런 다음 어떤 재료를 사용할 수 있는지, 어떤 것이 가장 높은 내구성을 가지고 있는지 찾아내는 것이었습니다. 그런 다음 예산에 맞게 만드는 방법, 로지스틱스를 최소화하는 방법, 디자인을 최소화하는 방법, 그 디자인 내에서 디테일을 최대화하는 방법은 무엇인지 고민했습니다. 이러한 질문에 대한 답을 찾은 후에야 실제 디자인을 시작했습니다. SH TUBE는 GUVS의 SH 컬렉션에서 첫 번째 작품입니다. 새로운 디자인도 아니고 전혀 놀라운 디자인도 아니지만 작동하는 디자인입니다. 지속 가능한 재료로 제작되었고 현지 장인이 만들었습니다. 이 디자인은 다양한 변형을 수용할 수 있으며 가정 및 상업적 환경에서 잘 작동하며 가장 중요한 것은 경제적으로 합리적인 디자인입니다. 이것은 현대적이고 인스타그램에 영감을 받은 세대의 실용적인 가구에 대한 접근입니다.
I currently live in Princeton New Jersey with my family of two kids, my wife and two cats. 5 minute drive from our place is a Trader Joe’s. They sell a selection of necessary products that makes grocery shopping easy for me, but also has enough of a wine selection that makes my wife happy. We probably do 33% of our grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s.

I’ve moved apartments 6 times in the past 10 years and one of the first things I do is replace the standard, default light fixtures. Even more so than furniture, I place a great deal of emphasis on lighting. I surround my place with light stands, table lamps and install new pendants. One of my go to lamps is the PH Pendant by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen. I’ve used the PH Lamp for a long time, recently having replaced it with the Aloys Gangkofner Erko Pendant. Light makes the mood and the mood determines my creativity.

CHARLES SOFA by ANTONIO CITTERIO for B&B ITALIA
One of my favorite “in-home” designers is Antonio Citterio. He’s a designer that makes pieces that just looks great in your home. They aren’t crazy or flamboyant. They’re not particularly creative or fun, but they’re just well designed. Looks great in your home type of design. This sofa in particular, we bought at an auction which was consigned by Hester Diamond, a famous art collector and mother of Beastie Boys member, Mike Diamond.
Hester sat on this sofa, Mike D sat on this sofa, Rick Rubin probably sat on this sofa and I sat on this sofa. Along with my 2 cats, we spent a lot of time on this sofa. It’s a strange color, one that was customized by Mrs. Diamond and one that was further customized by my cat DOT.

In 2017, me and my daughter Anna attended Barbara Kruger’s exhibition “The Drop” as part of Performa 17 Biennial. We were one of the first ones in a long line that wrapped around the block. While waiting 5 hours to participate in the shopping experience that was more of an audience / performative interaction, Anna and I talked about art, consumerism and appropriation. Even though I was talking to a 7 year old, our talk held her attention and its a memory that will last with me forever.
2017년에 저와 딸 애나는 퍼포마 17 비엔날레의 일환으로 열린 바바라 크루거의 전시회 “The Drop” 에 참석했습니다. 우리는 건물 주변에 길게 늘어선 긴 줄 중에서 가장 앞쪽에 있었습니다. 쇼핑 경험이라기보다는 관객과의 공연적 상호작용이었던 대기 시간에 우리는 예술, 소비주의, 그리고 도용에 대해 이야기했습니다. 7살 어린이와 대화를 나누고 있었지만, 우리의 대화는 그녀의 관심을 끌었고, 이는 영원히 기억될 추억입니다.
During the past 4 years, one of my proudest projects that we put together was ‘CFDC’ / Contemporary Furniture Design Competition. For 3 seasons we released an open call, selected, curated, exhibited and helped promote contemporary South Korean designers. It was a project that opened the doors for many young designers.
Many might not realize this but CFDC used a lot of our time and financial resources. We’ve fought incessantly about the direction and sustainability of this project. We were hoping that a larger conglomerate of the design industry would eventually come and take over the reigns or continue its vision but ultimately, we decided to end it after 3 years.
Second Room was a finalist in the first season who released their winning design ‘Bro-Coli’ through GUVS. They’ve grown tremendously during that time and we’ve enjoyed watching their progress.

When we opened our first shop in Philadelphia back in 2009, one of our first pieces bought and sold was the Petal Table. A table by Richard Schultz, a designer who worked for Knoll and who helped design the Bertoia Wire Collection. He went on to have solo shows at the MOMA and opened his own studio in Palm, Pennsylvania which is just a few miles from where I grew up. He’s known for his outdoor collection but this 1407 chair is a rare example of his minimal values infused with 80s aesthetics.

I was first introduced to NO AGE in 2008 with their song ‘Eraser.’ This album ‘An Object’ is neon green. I love neon colors.
